A forum of Libyan political parties convened in Tripoli this Saturday underscored the importance of the Advisory Committee, formed by the UNSMIL, to clearly define the duration of the interim phase of the political agreement, without any potential extension. Participants also highlighted the necessity of amending the constitutional declaration to align with the requirements of the current stage.
The forum witnessed the participation of 88 parties within eight major party blocs, including the National Movement of Libyan Parties, the Assembly of Libyan Parties, the Nation for All Bloc, the National Assembly, the League of Libyan Parties, the National Union, and the Coordination of Libyan Parties.
Attendees emphasized the need to formulate a comprehensive draft political agreement that addresses the root causes of the Libyan crisis and establishes a realistic and implementable roadmap, with a primary focus on the urgency of holding presidential and parliamentary elections without linking these two tracks.
The concluding statement stressed the importance of intensifying the meetings of the Advisory Committee and completing its tasks as soon as possible, given the extreme sensitivity and delicacy of the current stage. It also affirmed the necessity of actively involving political parties in the process of drafting electoral laws to ensure their representation in the upcoming elections by no less than 80%, to consolidate institutional party work.
Participants called for amendments to the constitutional declaration to include clear solutions to the loopholes resulting from previous amendments, as well as the inclusion of binding articles related to the popular referendum, encompassing the outcomes of the future Libyan political dialogue.
In conclusion, the political parties expressed their full readiness to take effective and peaceful steps to confront the prevailing chaos and corruption and to actively contribute to restoring the political process towards building a unified, stable, and democratic Libyan state.
