Algeria has expressed its deep concern regarding the renewed armed clashes in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, following the killing of Abdul Ghani al-Kikli, the head of the Stability Support Apparatus affiliated with the Presidential Council. Algiers views the ongoing violence as a waste of Libya’s resources and an exacerbation of the existing divisions within the country.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs asserted that these dangerous developments underscore the urgent need for Libyan unity and adherence to dialogue as the sole option for overcoming disagreements.
Algeria reiterated its call for all Libyan parties to demonstrate national responsibility and prioritize the interests of the people above any temporary considerations, and stated that national reconciliation is the optimal path for advancing the political process, under the auspices of the United Nations, towards the anticipated resolution.
Tripoli had witnessed sporadic clashes in several areas on Monday evening in the aftermath of al-Kikli’s death, the circumstances of which remain unclear.
The Defense Ministry of the Government of National Unity announced early Tuesday morning the success of the security operation launched to control the situation, and calm had reportedly returned to the city by morning.
