The GNU has deployed a mobile air traffic control tower to enable Tripoli International airport to manage private flights and essential emergency situations, particularly amidst challenges that fixed infrastructure might face.
This mobile tower represents one of the latest advanced technical innovations in air navigation and aircraft movement control. It was supplied to Libya in 2017, specifically for Mitiga International Airport, arriving from Italy via Tripoli Seaport. Its procurement was part of a close cooperation agreement between the Libyan Civil Aviation Authority and the Italian Civil Aviation Authority.
The signing ceremony was attended by several prominent Libyan officials, including the former Minister of Transport in the Government of National Accord, the Italian Ambassador, and the Mayor of Souq al-Juma. The mobile air traffic control tower is distinguished by its superior capability to provide air traffic control services in strict accordance with international standards. This makes it a practical, effective, and temporary solution for managing air navigation in locations experiencing difficult operational conditions or where existing infrastructure has suffered material damage, thereby ensuring the continuity of essential air operations.
