The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today, Sunday, a consensus between Egypt and the United States on the imperative of advancing efforts to end the political division in Libya and working towards regional stability. This alignment comes in parallel with an elevated level of coordination aimed at halting the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

The declaration followed a telephone call received by the Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigration, Badr Abdelatty, from the Senior Advisor to the US President for Middle Eastern and Arab Affairs and Senior Advisor for Africa, Masood Boulos. During the call, both sides exchanged views on the latest developments in Libya, Sudan, and the Great Lakes region.

The conversation also addressed the outcomes of the tripartite mechanism meeting for Libya’s neighbouring countries, which convened yesterday in Cairo, with the participation of the foreign ministers of Egypt, Algeria, and Tunisia.

The meeting underscored the importance of supporting internal stability within Libya and preserving its territorial integrity and sovereign institutions. It further stressed the necessity of the departure of all foreign forces and irregular fighters, in addition to the dismantling of armed formations.

The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed that Masood Boulos expressed his complete alignment with Minister Abdelatty regarding priorities concerning Libyan affairs, commending his recent visit to Cairo as “fruitful.”

For its part, the United States Embassy in Cairo welcomed the Egyptian-Algerian-Tunisian cooperation aimed at fostering calm in Libya. The Embassy urged Libyan parties to cease escalation, protect civilians, and return to the political dialogue track to build a stable and prosperous future.

Cairo hosted, yesterday, Saturday, a trilateral meeting involving the foreign ministers of Libya’s neighbouring countries. This meeting concluded with a call for an immediate cessation of tensions and the completion of the political process leading to the unification of institutions and the simultaneous conduct of presidential and parliamentary elections, as a decisive step towards stability.
