As part of the United Nations Mission’s consultations aimed at containing tensions and promoting stability in Libya, the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Stephanie Khoury, met today with a group of representatives from Libyan political parties and blocs in Benghazi. The meeting focused on hearing their views regarding the recent clashes in Tripoli and discussing the outcomes of the Advisory Committee’s work, as well as the country’s overall political trajectory.
Participants highlighted the urgent need to build a more inclusive and representative political landscape, emphasising the necessity of ending the monopoly of decision-making by existing entities.
The attendees stressed the importance of ensuring the active and genuine participation of parties in the political process. They also affirmed the significance of Libyans reaching a consensus, through constructive dialogue, on the fundamental principles for state-building and achieving sustainable stability. This includes unifying and building state institutions, including military and security bodies, as well as agreeing on a clear and transparent path towards elections.
Party representatives further stressed the need for reliable national and international guarantees to protect any future political settlement reached among Libyans. While emphasizing the importance of clear oversight mechanisms and a defined timeline, they called upon the United Nations Security Council to impose sanctions on anyone attempting to obstruct or undermine the political process in Libya.
