Do cats disappear during the Adha holiday?

Many observers frequently note the sudden absence of cats from streets and the vicinity of butchers’ shops and slaughterhouses on the first day of Adha holiday, a stark contrast to their usual presence. This disappearance raises questions about a potential link between the sacrificial ritual and these animals’ behaviour.
The vet, Dr.Adel Abbas, explained that cats are inherently delicate and highly sensitive creatures. They distinctly perceive the scent of blood, which instills fear and terror in them, prompting them to flee and hide during slaughter days.

Dr.Abbas added that slaughter within enclosed slaughterhouses represents the optimal choice. This not only contributes to maintaining public hygiene and avoiding distressing scenes that negatively impact humans and the environment but also ensures the protection of sacrificial animals themselves and other animals, such as cats, from harm. This includes respecting the feelings of the sacrificial animals and avoiding frightening or provoking them intentionally or unintentionally.

In a related context, the Municipal Guard in Bayda announced today, Friday, the closure of a slaughterhouse that

failed to comply with health regulations, and the workers operating it were apprehended. The agency clarified via its official Facebook page that the premises were immediately shut down, and the workers were referred to the investigation unit for necessary legal action. These measures are part of the Municipal Guard’s ongoing efforts to preserve public health and ensure compliance with laws regulating slaughter operations and monitoring designated locations.
