Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigration, Dr. Badr Abdel Aty, held a phone call with Hannah Tetteh, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Libya. During the call, the minister reviewed developments in the Libyan file and efforts to advance the political process.
Minister Abdel Aty stressed that the Libyan file is a top priority for Egypt, given its status as a direct neighbour. He underscored Cairo’s full support for UN efforts aimed at launching a comprehensive political process leading to a lasting resolution of the Libyan crisis.
He also emphasised the paramount importance of respecting Libyan sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, reiterating Egypt’s categorical rejection of all forms of foreign interference. He called for the activation of international resolutions concerning the withdrawal of foreign forces, mercenaries, and foreign fighters from Libyan territory, highlighting its crucial role in enhancing security and stability.
Abdel Aty pointed to the significance of unifying the Libyan executive authority on consensual and legitimate foundations that garner the trust and acceptance of the Libyan people, thereby contributing to the UN’s efforts.
Concluding the call, the Foreign Minister reaffirmed the necessity of supporting the intra-Libyan dialogue and achieving national consensus, free from external impositions and interventions. He clarified that this must be based on Security Council resolutions and the Skhirat Agreement, paving the way for simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections that meet the aspirations of the Libyan people for stability and prosperity.
