The commercial berths at Misrata Free Zone have welcomed the vessel UGR ALSAMHA, marking the arrival of the first natural gas-powered ship at the port. This event is part of a broader shift towards becoming a “green port” as part of a plan to develop operations under a more environmentally friendly system, aimed at reducing carbon emissions and promoting the use of clean energy.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the port’s administration reported that receiving such vessels aligns with international directives and the objectives of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which aims to cut shipping emissions by 40% by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

The statement added that the port management is actively developing its infrastructure to accommodate eco-friendly vessels and implementing projects that comply with international environmental protection standards.

Misrata Free Zone highlighted its investment partnership with CDT, a German company specializing in providing and developing marine environmental solutions. The company will focus on enhancing infrastructure for waste management and reducing marine pollution, supporting the Free Zone’s vision for sustainable development, and boosting the port’s regional and international competitiveness.
