The Head of the Government of National Unity, Abdelhamid Dabaiba, received the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in Libya, Hannah Tetteh, and her Deputy, Stephanie Khoury, along with Germany’s Ambassador to Libya, Ralf Tarraf, at the Council of Ministers’ headquarters in Tripoli.
During the meeting, the UN Envoy welcomed the release of a number of detainees who had been held for years under illegal detention. Tetteh described the step as “positive” and supportive of the path towards justice and national reconciliation in the country.
The discussions addressed political developments in Libya and explored ways to enhance cooperation between the Government of National Unity and the United Nations Mission. Attendees also touched upon mechanisms to advance the political process, in a manner that achieves the aspirations of the Libyan people for stability and the desired elections.
For his part, the German Ambassador provided a detailed briefing on the outcomes of the International Committee for Monitoring Libyan Affairs (Berlin) meeting, which took place last June. The Ambassador affirmed his country’s continued support for international efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive Libyan consensus among the various parties.
Abdelhamid Dabaiba reiterated the Government of National Unity’s full commitment to cooperating with the United Nations Mission. He also emphasised the Government’s ongoing support for the Mission’s efforts to reach a comprehensive political settlement that leads to the conduct of elections on an agreed constitutional basis. He affirmed that the Government is proceeding with the implementation of its strategy aimed at strengthening the rule of law and subjecting all institutions to unified state authority. These efforts are intended to solidify stability and unify sovereign decision-making throughout the country.
