Benghazi Antiquities Department Receives Surface Finds, Including WWII Military Button

The Department of Museums and Archaeological Stores, affiliated with the Benghazi Antiquities Control, recently received a collection of surface finds discovered by the Archaeological Survey and Registration Project team. This initiative falls within ongoing efforts to document and protect the archaeological heritage of the region.

The department clarified that the finds included a piece of copper coinage, in addition to a metal button that captivated researchers due to its distinctive design. The button bears a prominent emblem combining a royal crown and a bird of prey, likely an eagle—a design pattern typically associated with the British Royal Air Force (RAF), which was one of the most active military forces in the region during World War II.

According to specialists, this type of button was used as part of the official military uniform for British soldiers or officers, particularly in aviation and reconnaissance units. The crown symbolises the British Royal Crown, while the eagle signifies air power or related units. Historical evidence indicates a significant presence of British forces in Libya during World War II, especially in eastern areas such as Benghazi, Tripoli, and Tobruk.

The Benghazi Antiquities Control published an image of the discovered button on its official page, confirming that the Department of Museums and Archaeological Stores has prepared a preliminary report on the two archaeological pieces. The report included an initial technical description, along with cleaning and preservation operations conducted according to established standards. This serves as a prelude to their detailed study and documentation within the department’s records.

It is noteworthy that the Archaeological Survey and Registration Project aims to uncover sites and surface finds across various areas of Benghazi city and its suburbs. This project contributes to identifying diverse historical evidence that reflects the numerous epochs the region has undergone, from classical periods to modern history
