Libya’s Minister of State for Communication and Political Affairs, Walid Al-Lafi, affirmed that the Government of National Unity (GNU) is fully prepared to support the electoral process, stressing that legal obstacles hindering elections fall under the jurisdiction of the House of Representatives and the High National Elections Commission
Responding to questions about the government’s position on elections, Al-Lafi said: “Our stance is firm—we support moving directly to elections and avoiding yet another transitional phase. The Prime Minister consistently expresses this position in all political engagements.”
He added that the United States continues to back the UN-led process in Libya, a position shared by most international stakeholders. Al-Lafi expressed hope for more active international engagement to accelerate the political track and deliver the elections that most Libyans are eagerly awaiting.
“There is consensus on the importance of stability as a foundation for elections,” he said. “Our vision remains clear: direct elections are the only viable path forward. Libyans are tired of repeated transitional cycles.”
Al-Lafi pointed to legislative responsibilities as the source of current delays, stating: “Legal issues and the performance of the electoral commission fall squarely under the authority of the House of Representatives, which is responsible for passing election laws and overseeing the commission.”
He concluded by reaffirming the government’s logistical readiness to support the electoral process: “Our success in securing previous rounds of municipal elections is clear evidence of Libya’s ability to conduct credible national elections.”
