The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has praised the conduct of the High Council of State’s session held on Sunday, during which a new presidential office was elected with the participation of 95 members. The mission described the vote as transparent and orderly.
UNSMIL noted that the involvement of two-thirds of council members marks a significant move toward overcoming the internal divisions that hampered the body’s work over the past year. It expressed support for expanding this consensus by engaging remaining members.
The mission congratulated the newly elected leadership and voiced hope for a proactive role by all council members in breaking the political deadlock and advancing Libya’s stalled transition process.
It also underscored the council’s responsibility under the Libyan Political Agreement, emphasizing its role as an independent institution capable of restoring legitimacy through elections and contributing to necessary reforms.
UNSMIL urged council members to uphold their national duties and work collectively to support a Libyan-led political process, facilitated by the UN mission
