In a bid to accelerate development across southern Libya, Deputy Prime Minister for Southern Affairs and Defence Minister Dr. Ahmeid Houma met with Wadi Ataba’s mayor, Al-Saeed Qazou, on Sunday at Qasr Fezzan in Sabha. The meeting followed a government delegation’s inspection tour of the municipality’s districts the previous day.
At the heart of the discussions were proposals to bolster healthcare services through the construction of four new primary care centres. These facilities are planned for the communities of Sbeitat, Shahliya, Bahriyat, and Souiniya. Additionally, the health centre in Umm al-Hamam is slated for renovation, including the provision of medical equipment and an ambulance. All initiatives fall under Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar’s “Together for the South” campaign.
Attention also turned to existing medical infrastructure, with officials reviewing the status of Tasaoua’s general hospital, the diabetes clinic, and the rural hospital in Sbeitat. Houma underscored the need for the new centres to be strategically distributed to meet the healthcare demands of the region’s population.
Beyond health services, the meeting addressed critical infrastructure upgrades. Plans were presented to rehabilitate the 11.8-kilometre road in Umm al-Hamam and pave 4 kilometres of access routes leading into Doujal and Sbeitat — part of broader efforts to improve mobility and connectivity within the municipality.
Water and electricity shortages were also on the agenda. The officials discussed drilling a deep well in Umm al-Hamam to secure drinking water supplies and explored solutions to persistent power outages affecting several villages.
