Kidney patients in Surman protest shutdown of dialysis unit, demand urgent intervention

Patients undergoing dialysis at Surman General Hospital staged a protest outside the facility this week, denouncing the prolonged suspension of the dialysis unit due to a lack of medical staff and critical supplies.

Protesters said the blood filtration machines have been out of service for over two years, citing poor sanitation and deteriorating conditions inside the department as factors worsening their health.

Participants called on the Ministry of Health and the Government of National Unity to take immediate action by providing new dialysis machines to replace the outdated ones, securing dialysis fluids, deploying nursing staff, and supplying an ambulance. They also demanded improvements to the nutritional support provided to kidney patients and the urgent availability of anticoagulant injections, which have been in short supply according to the Medical Supply Authority.

The demonstration concluded with an official statement appealing to relevant authorities for swift intervention to resolve the crisis.
