Vice President of Libya’s Presidential Council, Abdullah Al-Lafi, held a high-level meeting with the Japan–African Union Parliamentary Friendship Association to explore avenues for revitalizing Libya’s economic landscape and strengthening bilateral ties. The meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), included Member of Parliament Ayman Seif Al-Nasr, Association President Ichiro Aisawa, Secretary-General Hideki Makihara, and Libya portfolio lead in Japan’s House of Representatives, Yoichiro Fukazawa.
Discussions focused on lifting the travel ban imposed on Japanese citizens, a move seen as essential to encouraging direct investment and facilitating Japanese participation in Libya’s reconstruction and development efforts. Both sides emphasized the importance of creating a secure and transparent environment for economic engagement.
The talks also addressed potential cooperation in health, investment, and support for peacebuilding and national reconciliation—areas identified as shared priorities. The Libyan delegation underscored the need for sustained international partnerships to help stabilize the country and unlock its development potential.
To institutionalize dialogue, both parties agreed to explore mechanisms for establishing a joint parliamentary committee aimed at enhancing consultation and coordination between their legislative bodies. The meeting concluded with a formal invitation extended to members of the Japanese delegation to visit Libya and assess opportunities across key sectors firsthand.
