According to the Italian news agency Nova, members of the Libyan House of Representatives, representing the regions of Tripoli, Benghazi, and Fezzan, met in the Italian city of Rimini to discuss progress on the path toward rapprochement between Libya’s east and west.
On the sidelines of the meetings, an informal session was held with an Italian delegation that included Senator Marco Scuria, head of the “Friends of Libya” international parliamentary group, and Nicola Colicci, president of the Italian-Libyan Chamber of Commerce. Scuria affirmed that the participation of parliamentarians from different Libyan regions was a “highly significant political event,” considering it a pivotal step to support the role of parliament in the transitional process, given the Italian government’s growing interest in Libyan affairs.
For his part, Colicci described the Rimini meeting as a model of “parallel diplomacy” that can contribute to building effective personal relationships between the two sides and open a practical channel to support Italian interests in Libya, especially amid the complex political landscape.
During the meeting, the Italian delegation informed their Libyan counterparts that the Italian Senate intends to ratify a bilateral agreement between Libya and Italy on the transfer of prisoners on September 10.
