Libya’s national football team now faces a challenging road to the 2026 World Cup after Cape Verde defeated Cameroon 1–0 in the eighth round of African qualifiers, reshaping the group standings.
With the win, Cape Verde climbed to the top of the group with 19 points, while Cameroon trails with 15. Libya, following its 2–0 victory over Eswatini, sits in third place with 14 points.
Cape Verde now needs just one more win from its remaining two matches to secure a historic first-time qualification. Meanwhile, Libya and Cameroon are left navigating a complex set of scenarios, with both teams still in contention for either direct qualification or a playoff spot.
Under the current rules, only the group winners qualify directly for the World Cup. The four best second-placed teams across the nine groups will enter a playoff round, where just one team will advance to the intercontinental playoff against teams from other continents.
