Sabratha Archaeological Site: Assessments, Challenges, and Future Plans

Sabratha Archaeological Site: Assessments, Challenges, and Future Plans

A technical team from Libya’s Department of Antiquities has launched fieldwork in the ancient city of Sabratha, aiming to reassess the boundaries of the archaeological zone. The initiative aims to update site data and produce a comprehensive report, outlining findings and corrective recommendations.

Field Assessment and Strategic Goals

The team’s work focuses on redefining the site’s perimeter and surrounding zone to ensure more effective protection. Updated data on the site’s condition and current threats are being collected to support future conservation planning.

Key Recommendations

The Department has called for stronger international cooperation, particularly with UNESCO and the Heritage Emergency Fund, to secure financial and technical support. It also recommends developing an integrated management plan that includes sustainable conservation, regular monitoring, and increased community awareness.

Ongoing Challenges

Since 2011, Sabratha has faced mounting threats due to political instability and armed conflict, which have hindered cultural heritage preservation. Environmental and human-related risks include pollution, urban encroachment, overgrown vegetation, humidity, and salt damage to stone structures. Waste mismanagement, lack of a comprehensive site plan, and limited funding and technical resources continue to obstruct conservation efforts.

Historical Significance and International Status

Sabratha is an ancient coastal city founded during the Punic era and flourished under Roman rule. It is one of five Libyan sites inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List since 1982. In 2016, UNESCO added Sabratha to the List of World Heritage in Danger due to damage from conflict, unregulated construction, and illegal excavations.

UNESCO has conducted multiple field visits, most recently in February 2025, to assess preservation conditions and provide technical assistance. Cultural heritage events have also been organized in Sabratha, involving local and international volunteers in site cleaning and community outreach.

The successful removal of Ghadames Old Town from the danger list in July 2025 serves as a motivating example for continued efforts in Sabratha.
