Al‑Ghribi Pledges Support for Developing Libya’s Healthcare System During Benghazi Visit

Kamel Al‑Ghribi, Chairman of Italy’s San Donato Hospital Group (GSD) and head of the GKSD investment holding, led a delegation of doctors, engineers, and administrators on a visit to Benghazi from September 9 to 12, at the invitation of local authorities.

The delegation toured key healthcare facilities in the city, including Benghazi Medical Center, the new maternity and children’s hospitals, the oncology center, and the Marj Medical Education Center. According to Italpress Agenzia Stampa, the visit reflects Al‑Ghribi’s strong commitment to Benghazi as part of a broader international cooperation strategy between GSD and GKSD to strengthen Libya’s healthcare system.

Planned areas of development include upgrading Benghazi Medical Center, training local staff through joint programs with Italy, establishing new hospitals, and expanding telemedicine and remote consultation services. At the conclusion of the visit, Al‑Ghribi expressed optimism about the outcomes, stressing the importance of contributing expertise and best practices developed in Italy to “ensure health, hope, and a better future for Libyan citizens.”

During the same period, Engineer Belqasim Haftar, Director General of Libya’s Reconstruction and Development Fund, received the head of Italian intelligence and a senior official delegation, accompanied by the head of GKSD S.R.L. Discussions focused on strategic cooperation between Libya and Italy in healthcare, medical training, infrastructure, clean energy, and waste‑to‑energy projects, aimed at supporting sustainable development.

The Italian delegation had previously carried out a series of field visits and technical meetings in Benghazi and Marj, inspecting hospitals and healthcare projects and assessing their needs. These efforts culminated in the signing of memoranda of understanding in health, infrastructure, clean energy, and environmental cooperation, described as a new phase of strategic partnership between the two countries.

In a related initiative, Libya’s Emaar Medical Services Company earlier hosted a high‑level Italian medical delegation of 14 professors specializing in advanced fields. The visit formed part of the “Marshal’s Initiative” for comprehensive healthcare and localizing treatment, and included extensive meetings with Libyan officials to coordinate future collaboration.
