Libyan Youth urge UN Mission to secure mercenary withdrawal

Libyan Youth urge UN Mission to secure mercenary withdrawal

During a workshop organized by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) in Tripoli on strengthening the ceasefire agreement, young participants recommended intensifying collaboration with Libyan authorities to ensure the withdrawal of mercenaries and foreign fighters from the country. This effort should include building the capacity of state institutions to monitor the ceasefire and oversee the withdrawal process.

Participants called for youth-led initiatives to promote social cohesion, raise awareness about challenges, and help develop a new generation of leaders. They also emphasized the need to create job opportunities for young people to prevent them from joining armed groups and facilitate their reintegration into state institutions.

Furthermore, they urged for increased awareness campaigns on social media to highlight the negative impact of mercenaries, foreign fighters, and armed groups on social peace.

The youth warned against the dangers of misinformation and disinformation and the necessity of combating hate speech on social media platforms. They called for enacting laws to address this phenomenon and empowering young people to report such instances.

They stressed the importance of ensuring the effective participation of women, youth, and civil society organizations in the political process. They also highlighted the need to utilize technology to engage with youth and develop platforms for dialogue and exchange of views.

Finally, participants commended UNSMIL’s role in resolving the recent crisis of the Central Bank of Libya and called for similar efforts to support the political process and elections.
