The Minister of Economy and Trade in the Government of National Unity, Mohammed Al-Huwaig, participated in the proceedings of the extraordinary ministerial meeting of the Arab Economic and Social Council, which was held at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States in Cairo on April 6th and 7th.
This Libyan participation came within the framework of preparations for the 35th Ordinary Arab Summit and the 5th Arab Development Summit, scheduled to be held in Baghdad, Iraq.
During his address, Minister Al-Huwaig emphasized that Libya places the strengthening of joint Arab economic cooperation at the forefront of its priorities during this critical and decisive stage. During the intensive working sessions of the meeting, Minister Al-Huwaig presented his country’s vision on the means to fully and effectively activate the Greater Arab Free Trade Area, stressing that achieving Arab customs union represents the cornerstone and the fundamental starting point towards achieving genuine and sustainable Arab economic integration.
The Minister also underscored the importance of supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, describing them as “the driving force and the true engine for achieving the desired economic development in the Arab region. Minister Al-Huwaig highlighted the promising and diverse investment opportunities that the Libyan economy abounds with, while urging Arab businessmen and investors to take advantage of the distinguished strategic location that Libya enjoys, as a vital bridge connecting the continent of Africa and the entire Arab world.
The Libyan Minister of Economy and Trade affirmed that these important meetings represent an ideal platform for translating shared political orientations into tangible economic action programs with a real impact on the ground, expressing his great optimism about the possibility of achieving a qualitative leap and making tangible progress in the path of Arab economic integration during the coming period.
