The Permanent Representative of the State of Libya to the United Nations, Ambassador Taher Al-Sunni, expressed his country’s aspirations that the upcoming international conference on the “two-state solution,” scheduled to be held next June under the joint auspices of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the French Republic, will result in an immediate end to the continuous Israeli infringements against the Palestinian people over long decades.
This statement came within the speech delivered by Ambassador Al-Sunni on behalf of the Arab Group during the first consultative meeting held at the United Nations headquarters in New York City, with the aim of preparing for the aforementioned international conference.
In the context of his speech, Al-Sunni emphasized the necessity of translating the resolutions and statements issued by the international community into tangible practical steps on the ground, stressing that talking about establishing peace remains an unattainable matter unless the independent and fully sovereign State of Palestine is recognized.
He also reiterated the inherent right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the right of refugees to return to their homes from which they were displaced, declaring Libya’s absolute support for the endeavors aimed at obtaining full membership for the State of Palestine in the United Nations. Furthermore, Ambassador Al-Sunni drew attention to the utmost importance of stopping all illegal Israeli settlement activities and taking effective measures to end the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories, while emphasizing the need for concerted international efforts to ensure the full implementation of international legitimacy resolutions.
