Libya has emphasized the imperative of eliminating nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction by nuclear-weapon states, in accordance with a specific and clear timetable.
This affirmation came in a statement delivered by the Minister Plenipotentiary of the Permanent Mission of the State of Libya to the United Nations, Mr. Essam Imran Ben Zaitoun, on behalf of the Arab Group, during the Conference on Disarmament held in New York.
In his statement, Mr. Ben Zaitoun called upon nuclear-weapon states to redirect their financial and human resources, which are increasingly invested in the development and production of these weapons, towards funding global development projects that serve all of humanity.
He also called for the establishment of a zone free of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons in the Middle East region, and urged concerted efforts to achieve this goal as soon as possible.
