Libya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Al-Taher Al-Sunni, held an important meeting with the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Hana Serwaa-Nyarko Tetteh. This meeting took place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, ahead of Tetteh’s upcoming briefing to the UN Security Council next Thursday, to address the latest developments and efforts regarding the Libyan crisis.
During the meeting, Tetteh provided Ambassador Al-Sunni with a detailed overview of the outcomes of the intensive consultations and meetings she has conducted in Libya since assuming her new role as Head of UNSMIL. She affirmed the United Nations’ commitment to supporting the Libyan efforts aimed at reaching a comprehensive and sustainable political solution to the ongoing Libyan crisis.
The two sides also exchanged views on the escalating economic and humanitarian challenges facing Libya and its people, jointly emphasizing the crucial importance of the upcoming phase and the pivotal role of the United Nations in supporting the full Libyan leadership and ownership of the political process. In this context, both parties stressed the necessity of supporting all sincere national initiatives aimed at ending the difficult transitional phases the country is going through and effectively paving the way for transparent national elections. Furthermore, the meeting touched upon the current regional developments and their potential impacts on the internal situation in Libya and the stability of neighboring countries. Both sides underscored the urgent need to strongly push towards achieving stability, given its significant positive repercussions for the security and stability of the entire region.
