In Tripoli, Stephanie Koury, the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Political Affairs, received a delegation representing Zintan. The delegation included members of the Municipal Council, the Council of Elders, and the Supreme Council of Zintan Revolutionaries, with the meeting dedicated to reviewing the latest developments in the stalled political process in Libya and ways to propel it forward.
During the meeting, Ms. Koury provided detailed explanations regarding the nature of the recently formed Advisory Committee, tasked with developing practical proposals to overcome the points hindering progress in the electoral track. She affirmed that these proposals would soon be presented to the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) as an initial step towards breaking the current political deadlock.
For their part, the delegation members expressed their deep concern regarding the stalemate in the country’s political process. They reiterated their commitment to holding free, fair, and inclusive national elections as soon as possible, alongside emphasizing the importance of unifying the divided sovereign institutions as a fundamental pillar for Libya’s stability. The delegation also underscored their rejection of any form of external interference in Libyan internal affairs, stressing the need for Libyans to determine their future.
The discussion also addressed the necessity of ensuring the highest standards of transparency and accountability in the management of Libya’s wealth and oil resources, while activating and implementing the principles of good governance as a foundation for building a strong and stable state. Delegation members pointed to the great importance of preserving Libya’s territorial integrity and unity, and placing the interests of the Libyan people at the forefront of any future political solution.
Concluding the meeting, Ms. Koury affirmed UNSMIL’s unwavering commitment to supporting efforts to achieve broad economic reforms in Libya, emphasizing that these reforms represent a solid foundation for achieving lasting stability, prosperity, and flourishing for all the Libyan people.
