Libyan military leaders meet U.S. Naval delegation in Benghazi to discuss defense cooperation

A delegation of senior military commanders from the General Command met with a high-ranking U.S. delegation during a visit by the warship USS Mount Whitney to the port of Benghazi. Discussions centered on mechanisms to expand areas of coordination in the military sector, including efforts to unify the military institute in Libya.

The meeting brought together the Secretary-General of the General Command, First Lieutenant General Khairy al-Tamimi; the Chief of Staff of the Security Units, Lieutenant General Khaled Haftar; and the Chief of Staff of the Naval Forces, Rear Admiral Shuaib al-Saber, along with other military leaders. Their counterparts included Vice Admiral J.T. Anderson, Commander of the U.S. Sixth Fleet; Special Envoy Ambassador Richard Norland; and U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Jeremy Brent.

During the talks, the role of the Libyan military institution in maintaining security and supporting stabilization was addressed. The importance of the Libyan-American partnership in related fields was also reviewed, particularly in light of the delicate stage the country is currently undergoing.

The U.S. side emphasized that the stability of Libya requires continuous coordination between local and international partners.
