The Antiquities Authority has refuted the accuracy of circulating reports alleging an act of sabotage at the Basilica building in the New Square of the ancient city of Leptis Magna. The authority affirmed that the structural failure affecting one of the architectural elements is due to the corrosion of iron rods used in restoration work dating back to the 1950s.
The authority clarified that technical teams from the Leptis Magna Antiquities Observatory are monitoring the situation on the ground and are working to implement the necessary restorations in accordance with approved scientific standards to return the damaged element to its original condition. The Antiquities Authority urged media outlets and those interested in cultural affairs to verify information and obtain it from official sources.
