The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) stated today that it is monitoring calls for demonstrations in the capital, Tripoli, and emphasized the right of citizens to peaceful protest.
The statement warned against any escalation of violence, urging all parties to commit to protecting civilians and refrain from using force against demonstrators.
UNSMIL pointed out that the use of violence against peaceful protesters constitutes a serious violation of human rights and may amount to crimes punishable under international law.
