The 78th session of the World Health Assembly has commenced in Geneva, Switzerland, with a Libyan delegation participating alongside representatives from other member states of the World Health Organization (WHO).

The current session is poised to address a range of pressing global health priorities. Discussions are set to encompass disease outbreaks, the profound impact of conflicts on public health, and the multifaceted challenges posed by climate change. Furthermore, the agenda includes deliberations on ageing populations, migration dynamics, and the accelerating pace of scientific and technological advancements in the health sector.

The assembly’s agenda also features a series of strategic roundtables, designed to convene representatives from participating delegations, partner agencies, civil society organisations, and a cadre of WHO experts. These gatherings aim to crystallise current and future priorities for global public health.

It is worth noting that the World Health Assembly serves as the supreme decision-making body within the World Health Organization. Its annual sessions are held in Geneva, drawing participation from all member states. Its core responsibilities include formulating the organisation’s general policies, appointing the Director-General, reviewing and approving the programmatic budget, and meticulously overseeing the organisation’s financial policies.
