Hanna Tetteh, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Libya, and her Deputy for Political Affairs, Stephanie Khoury, visited Misrata, where they met with Mayor Mahmoud al-Saqatari and other municipal officials, as well as representatives from civil society, youth groups, and Major General Mohammed Moussa, commander of the Central Military Zone.
During the meetings, participants exchanged views on the options put forth by the advisory committee. Emphasis was placed on learning from past experiences and establishing practical guarantees for the implementation of any political agreement, with a strong call for UN Security Council support for these endeavors.
Participants expressed concern over the country’s current situation, citing persistent institutional division, corruption, widespread weapon proliferation, indefinite postponement of national elections, and recurring security tensions, most recently the clashes in the capital, Tripoli.
In a separate meeting, the UN mission listened to a group of young people who presented the challenges they face in effectively participating in local and national decision-making, particularly in the political sphere.
Special Representative Hanna Tetteh affirmed the UN mission’s commitment to continue consulting with various Libyan factions to develop a roadmap for holding national elections and forming a unified government. She also stressed the importance of empowering the voice of the people to build a strong and sovereign state.
Tetteh commended the positive role played by the elders and dignitaries of Misrata in de-escalating tensions during the recent events in Tripoli, reiterating the UN mission’s commitment to supporting efforts for de-escalation and promoting stability in the country.
