In a high-level diplomatic meeting, Hannah Tetteh, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Libya, met yesterday in Cairo, Egypt’s capital, with Major General Hassan Rashad, the Head of the Egyptian General Intelligence Service, to review the latest rapid political and security developments unfolding in Libya.
The meeting saw a mutual affirmation of the utmost importance of de-escalating the tense situation in the capital, Tripoli, and the necessity of preventing further fighting and military escalation.
Major General Rashad also expressed Egypt’s full support for the efforts of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), which Tetteh greatly appreciated. The UN Representative confirmed the convergence of views between both sides on the imperative of halting violence and prioritising dialogue and peaceful solutions as the sole path to overcome the crisis.
