Following a period of escalating security tensions in the capital, Tripoli, the Libyan file has once again taken centre stage in discussions among neighbouring countries. This move represents a renewed and earnest attempt to find a sustainable solution to the Libyan crisis and to push towards the desired electoral outcome.

In their concluding statement, issued after a trilateral meeting held in Cairo, the three neighbouring states of Libya – represented by the foreign ministers of Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria – urged all Libyan parties to exercise maximum restraint and immediately cease any escalation, thereby ensuring the safety and security of the Libyan people. The ministers also underscored the necessity of holding simultaneous parliamentary and presidential elections, deeming this the “safety valve” for achieving lasting security and stability.

The ministers of Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria, in their joint statement, also reaffirmed the importance of advancing the political process in Libya towards the unification of state institutions. This affirmation comes in light of the grave developments unfolding in Libya and the latest security situation in the capital, Tripoli. They further stressed the imperative of dismantling and disarming militias, as well as supporting the political track within Libya, while preserving the unity and sovereignty of the Libyan state.

The statement also noted that the situation in Libya remains highly fragile, with a state of instability prevailing in the capital, Tripoli, and the western region in general. It emphasised the shared interest of Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria in enhancing continuous cooperation and consultation regarding the Libyan situation, given the direct impact of events in Libya on the security and stability of these neighbouring countries.

It is worth mentioning that this meeting occurred approximately two weeks after the security tensions that rocked the Libyan capital, Tripoli, which were followed by widespread demonstrations and protests demanding the overthrow of the Government of National Unity and the departure of its head, Abdul Hamid Dabaiba
