Egypt’s Pyramids FC has etched its name in golden letters into the annals of African football history, securing its first-ever CAF Champions League title. This monumental achievement came after a thrilling 2-1 victory over South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns in the second leg of the final, sealing a 3-2 aggregate win.
Pyramids dominated the match from the opening minutes, with striker Fiston Mayele breaking the deadlock in the 24th minute, followed by Ahmed Samy doubling the lead in the 56th minute. Despite Ikram Rayners pulling one back for Sundowns in the 75th minute, the goal proved insufficient to alter the course of the championship.
This continental triumph marks Pyramids FC’s first, a club relatively new to African competitions. Pyramids previously reached the CAF Confederation Cup final in 2020, where they narrowly lost to Morocco’s RS Berkane.
This latest coronation boosts the tally of Egyptian clubs in the Champions League to 19 titles. Al Ahly leads with a record 12 titles, followed by Zamalek with five, and one for Ismaily, now joined by Pyramids’ new accolade.
With this remarkable accomplishment, Pyramids FC has secured its participation in the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup, capping off an exceptional season.
