A recent report released by the World Food Programme revealed a limited increase in the average expenditure on the essential food basket in Libya during last April, rising by 0.7% to 909.44 Libyan dinars.
The international report clarified that this price increase reflects the inflationary reality experienced by the local market, affecting both food and non-food commodities.
Prices in the Eastern region recorded their highest monthly rate, with the average cost of the basket reaching 925.43 dinars, primarily driven by price increases in the cities of Ajdabiya and Kufra.
Conversely, the report indicated a 1.1% decrease in prices in Libya’s Western region last April, following the stabilisation of commercial activity between Libya and Tunisia. Meanwhile, prices in the South saw a limited decline of 0.1%.
The report attributed the primary reason behind the rise in the overall average food basket price to a 13.3% devaluation of the Libyan Dinar. April also witnessed a 2.1% increase in non-food commodity prices, reflecting comprehensive inflationary pressures.
