The Head of the Presidential Council, Mohamed Al-Menfi, held a meeting with the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, in Nice, France, on the sidelines of the UN Oceans Summit. The discussion focused on reviewing developments in Libya and ways to advance towards comprehensive stability, while considering the particularity of the current phase and paving the way for a lasting solution.
Guterres commended Al-Menfi’s efforts in consolidating the state of de-escalation and fostering a positive environment conducive to progress in Libya’s national track. The Secretary-General stressed the necessity of building on the current momentum with well-considered steps that would rebuild trust among the various Libyan parties.
The UN Secretary General welcomed the formation of the Security Arrangements and Human Rights Committee, viewing it as a step reflecting serious intentions to create a more stable environment, paving the way for a gradual return to the electoral process. The Secretary-General affirmed the UN’s continued full support for these vital initiatives.
Guterres affirmed the Secretariat’s commitment to continuing close coordination with the Libyan Presidential Council. He highlighted the significant importance of the existing partnership with the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), which aims to achieve consensus that will pave the way for a stable democratic phase in the country.
