Sergey Vershinin, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, held virtual consultations with Hanna Tetteh, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for the UN in Libya, to discuss the latest developments in the Libyan file and the prospects for achieving a comprehensive political settlement.
The Russian embassy in Libya, via its official Facebook page, reported that during the discussions, both parties emphasized the importance of unifying international efforts and continuing with good faith to resolve the ongoing crisis. They affirmed the UN’s pivotal role in leading the trajectory of the Libyan resolution.
Moscow and the UN mission leadership asserted that any political initiative must be predicated on broad participation from all influential forces within the Libyan arena. This, they argued, would ensure legitimacy and the sustainability of outcomes, while bolstering the establishment of robust institutions representative of all constituents of the Libyan people.
For its part, the Russian side expressed its readiness to bridge viewpoints between the disparate Libyan factions, leveraging its extensive relations with various parties. Russia also reiterated its full support for SRSG Tetteh’s endeavours and her efforts to advance the political process.
According to the Russian perspective, the Russian official maintained that the roots of the Libyan crisis stem from NATO’s intervention in 2011, stressing the importance of addressing the current ramifications in a spirit of consensus and national dialogue
