The management of the Sirte Free Zone held a series of intensive meetings on 13 and 14 June 2025 with a delegation from China Harbour, one of China’s leading state-owned companies specialising in maritime and land infrastructure projects. The discussions focused on opportunities for cooperation in implementing several vital strategic projects within the zone.

These meetings were chaired by Dr Mahmoud al-Farjani, chairman of the Sirte Free Zone board and director-general, who emphasised the paramount importance of forging partnerships with major international corporations, particularly in the context of phase three of the Sirte Free Zone port’s development. Al-Farjani highlighted the need to leverage Chinese expertise in constructing deep berths, as well as in port management and operation.

The Free Zone team also delivered detailed presentations on the zone’s components, which included the port, storage areas, service facilities, tourism projects, and grain silos. The presentation further addressed the strategic road linking Sirte to Waw via Sabha, extending to the southern border, which is regarded as a crucial artery for boosting trade with neighbouring African countries.

During the discussions, prospects for cooperation in port operation and the provision of specialised marine equipment, such as cranes and tugboats, were explored. Ways to attract Chinese investors to contribute to future projects spanning sectors such as ports, roads, railways, airports, solar energy, and sustainable agricultural initiatives were also investigated.

The meetings concluded with an agreement to continue technical consultations, paving the way for future partnership accords. Both sides affirmed their serious intent to strengthen cooperative ties and accelerate development within the Sirte Free Zone.
