Musa al-Koni and Abdullah al-Lafi, deputies to the Presidential Council, on Monday, received the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) strategic review team, led by Daniela Kroslak.
During the meeting, Kroslak provided a comprehensive briefing on the work of her technical team, which is tasked with evaluating Unsmil’s performance over recent years. She emphasised the critical importance of hearing the Presidential Council’s perspective at this sensitive stage to rectify the mission’s operational trajectory and ensure its effectiveness.
The deputies welcomed the delegation, underscoring the urgent need to embed the principle of accountability and enhance UNSMIL’s performance in a manner consistent with the complexities of the current Libyan political landscape, moving away from past approaches that failed to yield sustainable solutions.
Al-Koni and al-Lafi stressed the necessity of formulating realistic plans that consider the unique nature of the Libyan context and bolster the state’s sovereignty and unity. They further asserted that Libya must hold utmost priority on the United Nations’ agenda, advocating for the selection of individuals capable of comprehending the intricacies of the current crisis and addressing the prevailing political deadlock.
The deputies noted that the involvement of certain Libyan parties had complicated opportunities for national consensus, calling for a more dynamic UN role to bridge viewpoints and establish a clear, timed roadmap leading to elections. These elections, they stated, should be put forward for discussion within the forthcoming Berlin process.
For her part, Kroslak affirmed her team’s commitment to incorporating all diverse opinions into the ongoing evaluation process, ahead of submitting final recommendations to the UN secretary-general.
