Engineer Al-Gassem Haftar, Director-General of the Libya Reconstruction and Development Fund, met a high-level United Nations delegation led by Agnès Soucat, the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Resident Coordinator, and Humanitarian Coordinator for Libya.
The meeting aimed to enhance cooperation and joint coordination between the Fund and the wider UN system, particularly concerning reconstruction efforts and sustainable development in crisis-affected areas, notably those impacted by Storm Daniel in September 2023.
During the meeting, Engineer Haftar outlined the Fund’s strategic vision and highlighted key ongoing projects across various cities. He affirmed the Fund’s commitment to transparency and effectiveness standards in implementing development programmes, which encompass infrastructure rehabilitation, strengthening essential services, and empowering local communities.
Both sides also discussed ways to develop field coordination mechanisms, activate technical partnerships, and exchange information. This is intended to ensure an integrated and comprehensive response to humanitarian and developmental needs across all regions.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Fund’s Director-General commended the UN delegation’s visit, emphasising that this step reflects the international community’s keenness to support Libya’s stability and actively contribute to reconstruction efforts.
