Egypt demands abolition of US veto after Gaza aggression obstruction
The Arab Republic of Egypt has formally demanded the abolition of veto power, following its use by the United States to obstruct a crucial Security Council resolution aimed at halting the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, despite the resolution’s support from 14 other council members.
This explicit demand came in a speech delivered by Ambassador Osama Abdel Khalek, Egypt’s permanent representative to the United Nations, during an emergency General Assembly session convened to discuss “Illegal Israeli actions in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.” Abdel Khalek asserted that the American veto had disregarded the will of the international community and was being used as a cover for the continued crimes against innocent civilians.
The Egyptian ambassador noted that his country was compelled to turn to the UN General Assembly, which subsequently approved the resolution with an overwhelming majority on 12 June, considering it a necessary step to achieve a minimum level of justice.
Abdel Khalek called for intensive international pressure to secure a comprehensive halt to the aggression, end the siege on Gaza, and implement all relevant United Nations resolutions. He warned that the persistence of these violations would remain a permanent stain on humanity’s record.
The ambassador concluded by stressing the urgent necessity of reforming the Security Council to ensure an end to the unilateral use of the veto, which fundamentally contradicts the United Nations Charter and the spirit of international justice
