Amal Bougaighis, a member of the Political Dialogue Forum, has unequivocally rejected attempts by the European Union to settle migrants in Libya as part of its efforts to confront irregular migration.
In a Facebook post, Bougaighis stated that Libya is a transit country, not a destination for migrant settlement. She dismissed the offer of open visas for Libyans, asserting that Libyan citizens are not in urgent need of such visas.
She added that proposed development plans could be implemented along the border strips of the migrants’ countries of origin. She called for the improvement and development of essential infrastructure, such as electricity, schools, and hospitals, within those countries.
Bougaighis further suggested that Libya could be assisted in monitoring its vast desert borders, envisioning these border regions as rich sources of human potential that could expand over time to accommodate their populations within their own nations.
She viewed the anticipated visit by the European Union, concerning Libya’s potential mandate to act as a coast guard for their maritime borders in exchange for compensation, as part of these broader attempts.
