The Libyan Paralympic Committee, in coordination with the Higher Technical Committee for Wheelchair 3×3 Basketball, has announced its decision not to participate in the 2025 World Cup, scheduled to be held in South Africa.
The decision followed an extensive meeting involving officials from the Paralympic Committee and heads of technical committees from various sports federations, where the national team’s readiness and the circumstances surrounding its preparation for the tournament were discussed. Ismail Mohamed Al-Hajjaji, head of the Higher Technical Committee for Wheelchair 3×3 Basketball, was tasked with signing the withdrawal declaration.
The committee explained that the decision to withdraw was based on three primary reasons. Chief among these is the team’s insufficient technical readiness; the national squad is currently undergoing a training programme deemed inadequate for international competition standards, compounded by a lack of both domestic and international training camps.
The statement also cited the limited time remaining before the tournament, which precludes adequate preparation of the team. Additionally, the presence of several key players outside Libya was highlighted as a factor complicating their timely integration into the squad.
The Libyan Paralympic Committee expressed its appreciation for the efforts of all involved parties, reiterating its commitment to developing Paralympic sports in Libya and ensuring thorough preparation for future events.
