The Libyan Embassy in Italy has organised a humanitarian visit for several families of Libyan detainees to the city of Palermo. The visit aimed to enable these families to meet their relatives within Italian detention centres.
The embassy oversaw the organisation of the visit, coordinating directly with the relevant Italian authorities. This ensured that the visit was conducted under appropriate conditions, taking into account the humanitarian and social dimensions for both the detainees and their families.
This initiative falls within the embassy’s continuous efforts to underscore the humanitarian aspect of its engagement with the situation of Libyan detainees. It reaffirms Libya’s commitment to caring for its citizens abroad, safeguarding their rights, and fostering family and social communication in such challenging circumstances.
The embassy reiterated its commitment to liaising with the Italian side regarding the ratification of the agreement for the transfer of sentenced persons. This agreement, signed between the two countries in Palermo on 29 September 2023, aims to facilitate its entry into force as soon as possible, thereby enabling detainees to complete their sentences within Libyan territory
