Libya’s Ministry of Justice in the Government of National Unity (GNU), through its Permanent Committee for Monitoring Libyan Prisoners in the Italian Republic, has affirmed that the Libyan side has completed all necessary procedures for the implementation of the prisoner extradition agreement concerning those sentenced to custodial penalties, an accord previously signed between the two nations.
In an official statement, the Ministry clarified that the Government has fulfilled all its commitments regarding the agreement’s enforcement, asserting that there are no impediments or obstacles from the Libyan side hindering its execution. Awaiting the commencement of the agreement’s implementation by the Italian side, for the transfer of Libyan prisoners convicted in various cases. This will enable them to serve the remainder of their sentences within Libyan correctional facilities, by human rights principles and in furtherance of judicial cooperation between the two countries.
The statement underscored the GNU’s keenness to monitor the conditions of Libyan prisoners abroad and its diligent efforts to ensure their treatment by international standards, enabling them to complete their sentences in their homeland with due consideration for humanitarian and social dimensions
