Egypt’s General Authority for Healthcare has announced an agreement with Janssen Pharmaceuticals – a Johnson & Johnson global company – to establish a cancer treatment center of excellence in Aswan governorate, alongside an Integrated Practice Unit (IPU). This initiative is part of a broader regional cooperation project that includes Libya and several other countries in the region, such as Sudan, Jordan, and Ethiopia.
The announcement followed a meeting between Dr. Ahmed El-Sobky, head of Egypt’s General Authority for Healthcare, and Dr. Ahmed Sami El-Houfy, Janssen’s regional president for Egypt, Libya, and neighbouring countries. The discussion took place at the Authority’s headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, focusing on avenues for cooperation to enhance medical services.
Dr. El-Sobky affirmed that the project represents a “qualitative leap” in delivering advanced specialised care. The initiative will prioritise workforce training and the launch of an innovative digital platform. This platform will enable doctors and healthcare professionals in Egypt and the project’s partner countries, including Libya, to access the latest pharmaceutical advancements in oncology, immunology, and mental health.
El-Sobky further explained that the collaboration with Janssen also extends to supporting scientific research and providing medications for rare diseases. Additionally, medical teams will receive training on the latest artificial intelligence and digital transformation technologies within the healthcare sector.
For its part, Janssen reaffirmed its commitment to deepening its partnership with the Authority, commending the significant progress in Egypt’s healthcare infrastructure. The company confirmed its readiness to actively contribute to developing advanced health services that meet the needs of patients in Egypt, Libya, and the wider region.
The meeting also addressed bolstering the “We Care for You in Egypt” medical tourism project. This initiative aims to attract international visitors and expand access to Egypt’s modern healthcare system, including Libyan patients seeking treatment within Egypt.
The encounter concluded with a formal invitation from Dr. El-Sobky to Janssen’s regional president to visit the Virtual Care Hospital in Ismailia and explore the National Centre for Health Data Sciences, with the vision of it becoming a regional hub for developing digital health solutions.
