UN Envoy Intensifies Regional Talks in Addis Ababa to Steer Libya Toward Peace

In a diplomatic push to reinvigorate Libya’s political roadmap, United Nations envoy Hanna Tetteh held a series of focused discussions with African Union officials in Addis Ababa. Her visit comes ahead of a high-level summit of the AU’s Peace and Security Council, which will bring heads of state together to assess the Libyan crisis.

Tetteh began her outreach with Ambassador Rebecca Otengo of Uganda, where the two delved into Libya’s political and security challenges, its destabilizing effect across the Sahel region, and the growing concern over irregular migration.

The dialogue highlighted reconciliation efforts supported by the African Union and emphasized the need for tighter UN–AU coordination, with both sides backing a Libyan-owned process shaped and supported by international institutions.

In a follow-up meeting, Tetteh met Bankole Adeoye, the AU’s Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, to examine the transnational dimensions of Libya’s turmoil and the role of the AU’s High-Level Committee in guiding reconciliation.

Both parties stressed that regional and global collaboration is essential to help Libyan actors transcend internal divisions and prepare the ground for long-overdue elections. They also welcomed recent diplomatic momentum spurred by last month’s Berlin summit.

Tetteh wrapped up her meetings with Ambassador Daniel Owassa of Congo, focusing on national unity as the cornerstone of peace. Together, they assessed how reconciliation can pave the way for democratic transition while minimizing risks of renewed conflict.

Tetteh reiterated the urgency of sustained engagement to prevent instability from resurfacing. Owassa, for his part, reaffirmed his nation’s commitment to backing Libya’s reconciliation efforts. Both voiced strong support for a long-term strategic partnership between the UN and AU in helping Libyans build a secure, unified state.
