As international appeals intensify to halt what has been described as the “weapon of starvation” against Gaza’s population, UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that the horrors unfolding in the besieged enclave, particularly the death toll and scale of destruction, are “unprecedented in modern history.” Speaking at a UN Security Council session, Guterres stated that malnutrition is worsening and famine is “knocking on every door in Gaza.”
The Arab League condemned what it called Israel’s deliberate transformation of Gaza into a “zone of famine,” while Saudi Arabia reiterated its firm rejection of the occupation’s inhumane tactics. Riyadh welcomed a joint statement from 28 countries around the world that denounced the “inhumane killing of civilians, including children, as they attempt to meet basic needs for food and water.”
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also expressed outrage, saying the images of civilians being killed while receiving aid in Gaza are “unbearable.”
Meanwhile, ceasefire negotiations remain stalled in Doha, with mediators awaiting Hamas’s response regarding withdrawal maps, food aid, and prisoner exchanges. In contrast, Israel’s Prime Minister has threatened that the war will not end unless Hamas formally surrenders.
