Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has voiced strong support for the establishment of a Palestinian state, while cautioning against recognizing it before its actual formation. In an interview with La Repubblica, Meloni warned that symbolic recognition could create the illusion of resolution without addressing the underlying conflict.
“I firmly support the creation of a Palestinian state,” she said, “but I do not support recognizing something that does not yet exist. It risks making the problem appear solved when it is not.”
Her remarks come amid growing diplomatic friction following France’s announcement that it will recognize Palestine at the upcoming UN General Assembly in September, a move condemned by both Israel and the United States, as fighting continues in Gaza between Israeli forces and Hamas.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani echoed Meloni’s stance, stating that any recognition must be contingent on reciprocal acknowledgment of Israel by the prospective Palestinian state.
Meanwhile, a German government spokesperson confirmed that Berlin does not plan to recognize Palestine in the near term, emphasizing the need for long-overdue progress toward a negotiated two-state solution.
