Tunisian swimmer Ahmed Jaouadi claimed a landmark gold medal on Wednesday in the men’s 800m freestyle at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, clocking a time of 7:36.88, the third-fastest in the event’s history.
Jaouadi, 20, who finished fourth at the Paris Olympics, delivered a commanding performance, taking control midway through the race and holding off Germany’s Sven Schwarz (7:39.96) and Lukas Märtens (7:40.19), the reigning 400m freestyle champion.
Following his victory, Jaouadi dedicated the win to fellow Tunisian swimmer Ahmed Hafnaoui, a former Olympic and world champion currently serving a 21-month suspension for three whereabouts violations in anti-doping testing.
