On Sunday, the General Directorate of Coast Security reported the rescue of 58 irregular migrants off the coast of Zuwara, after their boat broke down and left them stranded at sea for four consecutive days.
According to the directorate’s statement, the main maritime operations room received a distress report about a vessel in danger. The patrol boat Wadi Gan P300 was dispatched and successfully carried out the rescue.
The migrants, of various African nationalities, were transported to the Al-Sha’ab Port disembarkation point, where legal procedures were undertaken in line with existing regulations.
Surge in rescue operations during July
The month of July witnessed a noticeable escalation in rescue missions conducted by the directorate, with hundreds of irregular migrants rescued from different African countries at multiple locations along the Libyan coast.
In one significant operation, the Wadi Gan patrol boat rescued 84 migrants off the coast of Tripoli, transferring them to Al-Sha’ab Port for medical assistance before referring them to the Illegal Migration Control Agency for further legal processing.
Additionally, the Diving and Rescue Unit, led by Lt. Col. Sari Al-Shaibi, saved 24 migrants near Qarabulli, approximately 25 nautical miles offshore, after their boat capsized and they were dispersed in the water. A woman’s body was recovered among the victims.
In another incident, the Wadi Gan P301 patrol boat carried out a rescue operation that recovered 39 migrants off the eastern coast of Tripoli, with authorities processing the case according to standard protocols.
